Rising Star Campbell Ridl Shines as Exeter Chiefs Face Bath in Semis

Every summer, Exeter Chiefs players set personal goals for the upcoming season. For Campbell Ridl, a breakout star this year, that goal was to earn a cap for the first team. At just 21 years old, Ridl, who previously played for Exeter University, aimed to be part of the matchday 23 regularly, which he thought would take years to achieve. Now, with 16 tries in 22 matches, Ridl has far exceeded expectations as he prepares for a crucial Premiership semi-final against reigning champions Bath on Saturday. Reflecting on his journey, Ridl expressed surprise and gratitude for his rapid rise. Injuries to key players like Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Paul Brown-Bampoe provided Ridl the opportunity he needed to debut for the Chiefs. His impressive performance has even pushed Brown-Bampoe to the bench, while Olly Woodburn has adapted to a full-back position to accommodate Ridl in the back three. Woodburn, a veteran at Sandy Park, has taken on a mentorship role, offering Ridl invaluable advice and insights. Ridl affectionately shares that Woodburn and hooker Jack Yeandle have nicknamed him 'the Ostrich' due to his height and speed. Originally from South London, Ridl moved to Cape Town with his family shortly after birth. His younger brother, Will, recently signed with the Sharks in Durban, furthering the family's rugby legacy. Despite his success, Ridl faced challenges adapting to the professional environment, requiring him to shift his mindset from university rugby. He balances his rugby commitments with studying marketing and management, often locking his door at night to maintain his focus before games. Ridl’s season hasn’t been without its low points; a red card in January against Bath marked a difficult moment. Yet, his journey continues as he prepares to face the formidable Bath team in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
