Carter Gordon Seizes Opportunity in Wallabies' Balanced Lineup for Japan Test

The Carter Gordon era for the Wallabies appears to have finally begun as the flyhalf has been named in the Australian XV to face Japan in Townsville this Saturday. After a series of setbacks, new coach Les Kiss opted to drop Declan Meredith following an inconsistent performance in Osaka, turning to the 25-year-old Gordon, who made his return to union last year after a stint in the NRL. Gordon had previously played against Italy in November, but injuries hindered his progress, including a quad injury and a calf strain in his first Test this year against Ireland. Despite Meredith initially being preferred alongside clubmate Ryan Lonergan, Kiss is now looking to Gordon as the Wallabies search for a reliable pivot with the World Cup approaching. Ben Donaldson will serve as backup from the bench, and both he and Gordon are among the seven players who have donned the No 10 jersey since Joe Schmidt took over in 2024. Kiss emphasized the need for balance in selection after a taxing week in the heat of Japan, stating, "The whole group has worked hard this week, and we know where we need to improve. This Saturday in Townsville gives us an opportunity to grow and strengthen our game on home soil in front of our supporters." Injuries have sidelined Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Len Ikitau, allowing Isaac Henry to earn his first Test start at outside centre, partnering with Hunter Paisami. The forward pack sees Lukhan Salakaia-Loto making his first Test appearance this season, alongside Lachlan Shaw, who will also start for the first time in gold. Charlie Cale and Carlo Tizzano round out the forward changes, with Harry Wilson captaining the side. In the front row, Taniela Tupou and Angus Bell will start, with Josh Nasser at hooker. Notably, Massimo De Lutiis could become the 1,000th player capped for the Wallabies if he makes his Test debut.
