From Premier League Glory to League Two Battle: Christian Fuchs' Fight for Survival

Christian Fuchs has much to thank for Leicester City's great escape of 2015. The Foxes staged an incredible recovery, starting from the bottom of the table in April and winning seven of their final nine games to finish 14th. Fuchs joined that summer and contributed to the team that won the title the following season, marking one of football's greatest underdog stories. However, a decade later, the Austrian faces a different type of challenge—fighting for survival in the Football League. Since taking charge of Newport County last November, Fuchs found his team four points adrift at the bottom of the League Two table. Winless in his first seven games, Newport remained in that precarious position at Christmas but have since clawed their way out of the relegation zone. Currently, they sit 22nd, just one point clear of the bottom two, Barrow and Harrogate Town, whom they host on Saturday. Fuchs acknowledges the significance of the upcoming match, stating, "Most of the games we play right now are the same, from where the boys came from being bottom of the table and working their way up." With four games left this season, including a potentially decisive fixture against Barrow, Fuchs reflects on his past, including 78 caps for Austria and stints in the Bundesliga and Champions League. Yet, he emphasizes that achieving survival with Newport would rank among his finest accomplishments. The latest setback was a 3-1 defeat to Notts County, following a 2-0 loss to Crawley Town. Despite the challenges, Fuchs remains determined, stating, "Every point counts and we need to make sure that we are at our best on Saturday, to go for the three points." His focus is clear: to ensure Newport County's survival in League Two.
