Eddie Jones Uses Geese Videos to Inspire Japan Ahead of Crucial Test Against Australia

Eddie Jones has unveiled a unique coaching strategy for his Japan rugby team—utilizing videos of geese flying in formation. This method aims to enhance teamwork as Japan prepares to face Australia in a two-Test series this month. In their previous encounter, Japan suffered a narrow defeat, losing 35-32 to the Wallabies in Osaka last weekend. In response, Jones has made five changes for the upcoming match in Townsville, Australia, on Saturday. Notable inclusions are university student Yoshitaka Yazaki on the wing and Shunsuke Uenobo, who will make his first start at center. Jones pointed out that Japan's support play during the first match “wasn't as sharp as we would have liked,” prompting him to turn to nature for inspiration. He explained, "The reason we watch videos of geese is that the head of the flock is like the ball-carrier. The ball carrier is king, and then everyone else has got to follow after that." He elaborated on the geese's teamwork, noting their ability to travel vast distances in formation, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of the support players to react to the ball-carrier’s movements. Australia, despite an early red card for Miles Amatosero, managed to secure their first victory under new head coach Les Kiss, who took over from Joe Schmidt earlier this year. Looking ahead, Jones expressed determination, stating, "We’ve set ourselves the task of really taking it to Australia this week." He added, "We're very disappointed to lose the last game, so the most important thing now is how we take on this game."
