Ulster's Grit Secures Narrow Victory Over Ospreys in European Challenge Cup

Ulster head coach Richie Murphy has commended the "grit" displayed by his team in a hard-fought 28-24 victory over Ospreys during Saturday's European Challenge Cup last-16 clash at the Affidea Stadium in Belfast. Despite challenging weather conditions, Cormac Izuchukwu, David McCann, Jacob Stockdale, and Nick Timoney each contributed tries, helping the Irish province secure a quarter-final matchup against La Rochelle in Belfast next Friday. The game saw the Welsh side leading 17-14 at halftime, but with the wind favoring Ulster in the second half, they mounted a comeback to clinch the win. The hosts faced a tense finale when Kieran Hardy's potential match-winning try was disallowed after a forward pass was confirmed by the Television Match Official (TMO). "A little bit of relief definitely. It never was going to be easy and the conditions obviously made it very difficult," Murphy stated post-match. He acknowledged the pressure from the first half, where missed opportunities led to early scores against them, though he remained optimistic about their progression to the quarter-finals. Murphy noted the adverse weather as the worst he had experienced during his tenure, leading to inevitable handling errors. He emphasized, "We showed a nice bit of grit, we stuck at it and we got over the line." Looking ahead, Murphy expressed excitement about facing Ronan O'Gara's team, acknowledging their status as one of Europe’s top teams. "It's a massive game for us, it's at home... If we can do that we can cause any team a threat so we're excited about what's ahead."
