Zinedine Zidane Returns as Head Coach of France in Historic Appointment
Zinedine Zidane has officially taken over as France’s new head coach, succeeding Didier Deschamps, who led the team to glory in 2018. The announcement was made by the French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo at the FFF headquarters in Paris on Tuesday, where Zidane received a four-year contract. Diallo described the moment as exceptional, highlighting Zidane’s legendary status in French soccer. He stated, “Zinedine is one of the legends of French soccer and for many years he said one of his dreams was to take charge of the France team.” At 54 years old, Zidane expressed his excitement about the new role, stating, “For me it’s a continuity, a dream.” He mentioned that he had received multiple offers during his five-year break from coaching but declined them all in favor of leading the French national team, saying, “It was the only thing I wanted to do.” Zidane described his appointment as “an immense joy,” emphasizing his readiness for the challenge ahead. He acknowledged the achievements of Deschamps, who stepped down after Les Bleus' semi-final exit to Spain in the recent World Cup. “Today I have the opportunity to be in charge of this team and I will give everything so that this team can win,” he affirmed. Diallo revealed that discussions with Zidane began in February 2025, following Deschamps' announcement of his intention to step down after the 2026 World Cup. Zidane concluded, “What motivates me is the game... I want to be a leader by experience.”
