UConn's Sarah Strong: How European Roots Shape a Future WNBA Star
In the heart of Chicago, the United Center buzzed with excitement during the record-setting 2026 WNBA All-Star Game, while just steps away, the Chicago Bulls' practice facility hosted the fourth annual Basketball Without Borders All-Star Camp. This event brought together 40 top international prospects, including Sarah Cisse, the 2026 U20 EuroBasket Women MVP, and Aïnhoa Risacher, sister of NBA No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher. Among the campers was UConn star Sarah Strong, the 2025 NCAA national champion and projected No. 1 pick in the 2028 WNBA Draft. Born in Madrid, Strong was raised in a basketball family; her mother, Allison Feaster, currently the camp director and vice president of the Boston Celtics, played professionally overseas. Strong credits her upbringing in Europe for shaping her basketball skills and understanding. "I think it taught me a different side of basketball," Strong said, emphasizing the focus on fundamentals in European play. Her journey began at Club Baloncesto Alcobendas, where she honed her skills while watching her mother. After moving to the U.S. at age 10, Strong became the top recruit in her high school class, a four-time gold medalist for Team USA, and a standout in college basketball. Her mother noted that growing up in Spain helped shape Strong's identity and unique perspective on the game. Strong enjoyed connecting with younger players at the camp and expressed her excitement about the future of international basketball. She draws inspiration from European stars like Luka Dončić and Nikola Jokić, who influence her playing style. As she prepares for her junior season, Strong steps into a leadership role for the Huskies, aiming to rebound from a disappointing Final Four defeat to South Carolina. "My role is definitely changing... I'm just excited for it," Strong stated, ready to guide her diverse team toward another national championship.
