Mateta Challenges Crystal Palace Contract Validity Amidst Injury Woes and Opening Day Defeat
Jean-Philippe Mateta has officially challenged the validity of the final year of his contract with Crystal Palace, taking his case to Fifa. The France international contends that the last 10 months of his deal, which is set to expire in June 2027, is invalid. Mateta, who started Palace's Premier League opener against Everton on Saturday, originally joined the club in 2021 from Mainz 05 on an 18-month loan. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract upon joining permanently in January 2022, which included an option for a 12-month extension that Palace activated in 2024. Despite the activation, the 29-year-old argues that this optional year should be void. His case was heard by an independent tribunal under Premier League rules, but there has been no official confirmation of the outcome. Reports indicate that Mateta's contract remains binding, leading him to escalate the matter to Fifa, which recently ruled that it lacks jurisdiction to overrule the contract. Had Mateta succeeded, he could have become a free agent before the expiration of his deal. Since joining, he has scored 67 goals for Palace, playing a crucial role in the club's historic FA Cup and Uefa Conference League victories. Meanwhile, Ismaila Sarr missed the matchday squad due to a groin injury, and Chadi Riad suffered a serious knee injury during the 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park. With back-to-back injuries, Riad's absence has been significant since his arrival in 2024. Overall, the opening day proved challenging for new manager Pierre Sage, with wantaway players and injuries adding to the difficulties.
