Inter Poised to Sign John Stones After Stellar World Cup Performance
Inter are nearing a deal to sign John Stones as a free transfer after the 32-year-old defender departed Manchester City in June. Both Inter and their rival Italian club Juventus showed interest in Stones prior to the World Cup, but the Nerazzurri now hold the advantage following his impressive performances during England’s journey to the semi-finals. Last season, Stones made only 13 appearances for City before suffering an injury in December. Following a two-month recovery, he featured just five more times under then-manager Pep Guardiola. During the World Cup, Stones had a notable tournament: Started the opening match against Croatia. Remained an unused substitute against Ghana and Panama. Made substitute appearances in knockout victories against Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mexico. Started in the quarter-final win over Norway and played in the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina. At the end of last season, Stones expressed his desire to compete at the highest level, stating, “I still feel I have so much to give a club and I feel in a good moment physically. There is a lot for me still to fight for in my career and a new challenge will be exciting.” He also mentioned being open to passing on his experience to a new club. While Inter is optimistic about finalizing the deal, the agreement could fall through if another Premier League club shows interest.
