LeBron James Rules Out Grizzlies, Reflects on 2003 Draft Day Decision

LeBron James has made it clear that the Memphis Grizzlies are not in his future plans should he leave the Los Angeles Lakers after this season. In a recent episode of the YouTube show "Bob Does Sports," released on Thursday, James suggested that the Grizzlies should consider relocating to Nashville, humorously stating he might have emulated Eli Manning by refusing to play for them if they had won the 2003 NBA Draft Lottery instead of the Cleveland Cavaliers. During the episode, James expressed his frustrations with travel at this stage in his career, saying, "F--- yeah," when asked if it was worse now. He elaborated on the difficulties of traveling to cities like Milwaukee and Memphis, suggesting that Nashville offers a better environment for a franchise, citing its amenities and vibrant culture. James noted that the only chance the Grizzlies had of acquiring him would have been in 2003. He stated: "I might have pulled an Eli Manning and not showed up." This isn’t a new sentiment; Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors echoed similar thoughts recently, advocating for the Grizzlies to move to Nashville due to the lack of suitable accommodations in Memphis. Looking ahead, the Grizzlies' lease at FedEx Forum expires in 2029, and Memphis Mayor Paul Young has stated they are working diligently on an extension. However, speculation about the franchise's future persists, especially with recent trades involving Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. Reflecting on the 2003 Draft, which included future Hall of Famers like Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade, James recalled his disbelief when the Grizzlies secured the second pick, which ultimately went to Detroit. He emphasized that he never considered playing for Memphis, despite their promising young roster at the time.
