RG Snyman Faces Long Recovery After Devastating ACL Injury Setback

RG Snyman, the towering lock for Leinster and the South Africa national team, is set to endure a lengthy recovery after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. This unfortunate injury occurred during Leinster’s recent United Rugby Championship loss to Glasgow, with scans confirming the severity of the setback. At 31 years old, Snyman's injury history is concerning; he previously tore his ACL while playing for Munster in 2020 and faced a re-rupture just four games after his return in 2021. His absence poses a significant challenge for Leinster, who aim to contend for both the URC title and the Investec Champions Cup this season. Leinster head coach Jacques Nienaber expressed the team's dismay, stating, "It's devastating for us and for him," especially as they prepare for the round of 16 clash against Edinburgh in the Champions Cup. Snyman's transition to Leinster at the beginning of last season came after a limited appearance record of just 20 games over four seasons at Munster due to injuries. His current situation is particularly troubling for Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus, as Snyman is likely to miss the majority, if not all, of the national team's international fixtures this year, further impacting their lock options.
