Lucy Bronze Reflects on England's Historic 500th Match Ahead of World Cup Qualifier

Lucy Bronze is embracing the significance of England’s upcoming milestone as the Lionesses prepare for their 500th match in a World Cup qualifier against Iceland on Saturday. The Chelsea defender, who has made 146 appearances for England, is a vital part of the team's history, having participated in three World Cups and four consecutive European Championships. She currently ranks third on the Lionesses’ all-time caps list. Following a recent victory against Spain at Wembley, where England secured their position for next summer’s tournament in Brazil, the team aims to build on this momentum in Reykjavik. “It’s insane,” said Bronze, reflecting on the dual significance of the milestone. “It’s crazy to think, in two ways, that it’s the 500th game on both sides of it. It’s only been 500, but at the same time, oh my God, it’s 500 games. It’s amazing to be a part of it.” Bronze noted that the team has spent time discussing the Lionesses' history, including visits from former players who shared stories about the inaugural match and their journey. “When you’re putting on an England jersey, you know how much it means to so many people,” she added. England's head coach Sarina Wiegman updated on captain Leah Williamson, confirming her fitness after a hamstring issue, while Keira Barry of Bay FC, who received her first senior call-up, had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Currently, England leads their qualifying group with a perfect nine points, sitting three ahead of World Cup holders Spain in group A3. Only group winners will secure automatic qualification for the tournament.
