Marlie Packer Joins Harlequins as She Exits Saracens for New Opportunities

Marlie Packer, a two-time Women's Rugby World Cup-winner, has confirmed her move to Harlequins Women for the upcoming season, marking her departure from Saracens. The 36-year-old revealed her contemplation of retirement after the 2025-26 season but decided to pursue new challenges following Saracens' decision not to renew her contract. In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, Packer expressed her excitement about joining Harlequins, particularly drawn by their "world class" back row, including Alex Calendar and Aoife Wafer. She aims to position herself for selection with the British and Irish Lions in 2027. Packer stated: "Why would I not want to chuck myself in the mix with them?" "I still want to put my hat in the ring for that, and I think moving to Quins definitely does that." Initially considering retirement, a discussion with England head coach John Mitchell reignited her passion for the game. With family responsibilities, including her son Oliver and a mortgage, she proactively reached out to Harlequins to explore opportunities. After impressing Quins head coach Ross Chisholm during a training session with the Red Roses, he recognized her potential fit for the team. Packer shone in the recent Six Nations, earning player of the match awards against Wales and Italy, which prompted her to make crucial life decisions. Upon returning to Saracens, head coach Alex Austerberry confirmed that no new deal was forthcoming, solidifying her choice to transition to Harlequins, which is conveniently located just 20 minutes away from her home, making it the ideal fit as her partner, fellow England World Cup winner Rosie Galligan, is pregnant.
