Mason Greenwood Emerges as Top Target for Fenerbahce's Presidential Contenders

Mason Greenwood is now the prime transfer target for Fenerbahce's two presidential candidates amid a challenging period at Marseille. The former Manchester United and England forward has had a difficult few months, with Marseille's new sporting director Gregory Lorenzi indicating last week that the club is open to offers for Greenwood, who has three years remaining on the five-year contract he signed upon leaving United in July 2024. The rivalry for the club presidency features former president Aziz Yildirim and current candidate Hakan Safi, with a decision expected on Sunday. It is believed that personal terms will not pose a hurdle in acquiring Greenwood. Despite charges of attempted rape and assault being dropped in February 2023, Greenwood has faced significant challenges in rebuilding his career following an internal investigation that concluded he could not return to Manchester United. In April, Tottenham's new boss Roberto De Zerbi issued an apology for defending Greenwood during his tenure at Marseille. The 24-year-old has made a notable impact at Marseille, scoring 48 goals in 81 appearances. He finished joint second in the Ligue 1 golden boot standings this season with 16 goals, trailing only Rennes' Esteban Lepaul. Fenerbahce, which has finished second in the Turkish Super Lig for five consecutive seasons, will participate in the Champions League’s second qualifying round in July. When Greenwood was sold to Marseille for 31.6 million euros (£26.6 million), United included what sources described as a "sizeable sell-on fee." Additionally, Greenwood has recently drawn interest from Serie A side Roma.
