Wolff Acknowledges Norris and Hamilton as Serious Title Threats in F1 Championship
Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, has recognized that Lando Norris from McLaren and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari are genuine contenders for the Formula One world championship. This acknowledgment comes after Norris secured a decisive victory at the Dutch Grand Prix held in Zandvoort. With Mercedes' early-season dominance seemingly faded, Wolff highlighted the challenges ahead, noting that the team cannot develop at the same pace as its rivals due to a different allocation of their budget. Norris clinched victory at Zandvoort, marking his second consecutive win this season, while Kimi Antonelli led the Mercedes drivers, finishing second, and George Russell took third. The championship standings show Antonelli leading Hamilton by 59 points and Norris by 83 points. Wolff stated, “We are absolutely conscious of the threat. It’s not only Norris, it’s also Ferrari... This is going to be tough.” He emphasized the need for Mercedes to optimize their performance every weekend as they face 11 races remaining in the season. While Ferrari has also made strides, with both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc claiming wins, Mercedes has only introduced one major upgrade this season. Wolff explained, “We haven’t got the money to put developments on account,” indicating a strategic spread of their resources. Looking ahead, Mercedes is not set to bring further major upgrades until the Bahrain GP in October. Meanwhile, Ferrari is expected to introduce a significant engine upgrade at the upcoming Monza race, with Antonelli prepared to take a new engine, incurring grid penalties. Post-race, both Antonelli and Russell acknowledged the speed of the McLaren, but Norris maintained that Mercedes remains the top car, stating, “We certainly have a car now capable of beating them.” His confidence reflects the competitive nature of the championship as the season progresses.
