Newcastle Eyes Nico Gonzalez as Replacement for Bruno Guimaraes Amid City Midfield Shuffle
Nico Gonzalez is on the verge of joining Newcastle United, as the club seeks a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes following his recent transfer to Arsenal. While Newcastle has yet to finalize a fee with Manchester City for Gonzalez, optimism is growing regarding the potential deal. Gonzalez, a former Barcelona midfielder, became part of City's midfield overhaul this summer after the departures of Bernardo Silva, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rodri. He joined City from Porto in January 2025 for £49 million, making 59 appearances and scoring four goals. However, he remained an unused substitute during City's recent 2-1 victory over Bournemouth, as Marc Guehi filled in at midfield. As City continues its midfield revamp, they have struck a deal with Lille for Ayyoub Bouaddi, potentially costing £85 million. Selling Gonzalez, along with Savinho—who is set to join Tottenham for £85 million—could enable City to generate nearly £300 million in transfers this summer. Newcastle, in their quest for a more experienced midfielder, considered options like Joao Palhinha and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. In addition to pursuing Gonzalez, they have already signed two younger midfielders, Sean Steur (18) and Aladji Bamba (20), both of whom made their debuts against Liverpool. With Guimaraes' departure and Sandro Tonali’s £100 million move to Tottenham, Newcastle is actively seeking further midfield reinforcements.
