Nike Faces Scrutiny Over World Cup Kits with Design Flaws for England and Others

Sportswear giant Nike is currently investigating a design issue affecting the shirts set to be worn by several teams, including England, at this summer's World Cup. During the recent international break, noticeable bulging around the shoulder seams was observed, particularly on the kits of England, France, and Uruguay. Nike has not responded to a request for comment from BBC Sport; however, a spokesperson stated to the Guardian: "During the recent international break, we observed a minor issue with our Nike national team kits, most noticeable around the shoulder seam. Performance is unaffected, but the overall aesthetic is not where it needs to be." The shoulder seam issue affects both 'match' shirts intended for players and 'stadium' shirts aimed at supporters, leading to concerns among fans regarding their recent purchases. In the United Kingdom, the retail price for England's stadium shirt is £89.99 and the match shirt is £134.99. Nike has produced the kits for co-hosts Canada and the USA, as well as for Turkey, Australia, Croatia, South Korea, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Norway. The company has been responsible for designing England's men's and women's kits since 2013. A Nike spokesperson emphasized, "We always hold ourselves and our products to the highest standards and this fell short. We’re working quickly to make this right for players and fans, because every kit should reflect the care, precision, and pride that the game deserves." These kits have been designed to incorporate performance cooling technology to address the extreme temperatures expected at the tournament in the US, Canada, and Mexico, which begins on 11 June. England's campaign kicks off on 17 June against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, while Scotland faces Haiti on 14 June in Massachusetts.
