The Rugby Football League (RFL) confirmed that Kear passed away suddenly on Sunday afternoon while traveling back north after the Challenge Cup Final held the previous day at Wembley. Kear was a highly respected figure in rugby league, with a coaching career spanning over 700 matches. His notable achievements include: Sheffield Eagles' stunning 1998 Challenge Cup victory against Wigan, regarded as one of the biggest upsets in the competition's history. Leading Hull FC to a Challenge Cup win in 2005, defeating Leeds Rhinos in Cardiff. Coaching England during the 2000 World Cup, reaching the semi-finals, and spending 11 years at the helm of Wales, participating in the 2017 and 2021 World Cups. In his playing career, Kear made 133 appearances for his hometown club Castleford from 1978 to 1988. Despite his deep ties to the club, he never coached the Castleford Tigers.
