Southampton FC Women Faces Budget Cuts Amidst Challenging Summer Ahead of New Season
Southampton FC Women's head coach Simon Parker has described the summer as "challenging" following significant budget cuts for the upcoming season. The team, competing in Women's Super League 2, will now primarily play their matches at Eastleigh FC's Silverlake Stadium, moving away from St Mary's Stadium, where they had been based for the last four years. With the new campaign starting on October 1, 2023, Parker revealed to BBC Radio Solent that they are now operating with the smallest budget in WSL 2. This reduction has substantially impacted their strategy for the 2026-27 season. He stated, "The summer has been a bit challenging with a few of the things that have happened," while sources at Southampton denied any connection between these budget cuts and the recent spygate scandal involving the men's team. Last season, Southampton's women finished fifth in the league, their highest position since re-forming nine years ago, and were in contention for promotion. Parker noted, "It was a strong first year last season... finishing fifth in a promotion push for a large part of the season was really promising." However, the club's plans have had to change. Parker expressed the need to pivot from their initial strategy, stating that the aim was to re-engage key players but now they must adapt to their new circumstances. Additionally, it was announced that Marieanne Spacey-Cale, the director of football, would step down, marking a significant transition for the team.
