Eamonn McManus Advocates Collaboration Between NRL and Super League for Rugby League Growth
St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus emphasizes the need for the NRL and Super League to collaborate in order to enhance rugby league's global presence, rather than allowing one to overshadow the other. Recently, Super League confirmed receiving an investment proposal from the Australian Rugby League Commission aimed at boosting the European league's revenue. McManus criticized the approach taken in discussions, stating, "The whole issue has been gone about in the wrong way." He described the NRL as the most successful rugby competition globally, yet noted that its growth is hindered by geographical and economic constraints. He remarked, "Australia by its definition is a prisoner of its own geography, it's a prisoner of its own economy." Despite challenges, McManus sees significant potential for growth in European rugby league, stating: Rugby league in Europe is the "antithesis" of Australia's success. The sport has not been managed effectively for too long, but change is possible. This is not about "picking at a carcass" but about fostering a partnership for mutual benefit. Rhodri Jones, managing director of the Rugby Football League (RFL), echoed this sentiment, expressing interest in forming a partnership with the NRL to create a unified global entity for the sport. While acknowledging that rugby league may never rival soccer, McManus argues it should not remain a minority sport. He insists that a partnership, rather than a takeover, could significantly strengthen rugby league's position in the global sports arena, urging for a shift in mindset regarding the sport's valuation and investment.
