Tuchel Faces Injury Woes as England Prepares for World Cup Challenge

Thomas Tuchel expressed his anxiety about player injuries as England approaches the World Cup, admitting he will be watching matches with trepidation. Following the experimental March meet-up, he feels more confident about his World Cup squad selection. In the final camp before naming the 26 players, England's first wave of Tuchel’s expanded 35-man squad faced a 1-1 draw against a physical Uruguay and suffered a 1-0 loss to Japan just days later. The defeat marked England's first-ever loss to Asian opposition, leaving fans disappointed as key players like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Jordan Henderson were not risked during the matches. Recent injuries have seen Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and John Stones leave the squad, heightening Tuchel's concerns. He noted, "It will be scary to watch TV on the weekend... every muscle injury can mean that a player misses out." Tuchel acknowledges the impact of these absences on team leadership, stating, "They are captains for their clubs and they drive the standards. And then Harry Kane drops out... This affects, of course, a group." Despite the challenges, Tuchel remains hopeful about managing injuries in the lead-up to the World Cup. He plans to name his England squad after the Premier League season, ahead of FIFA’s May 31 deadline. Looking ahead to the Group L opener against Croatia on June 17 in Dallas, Tuchel is determined to improve England’s record against top teams. He emphasized that while the results were disappointing, they should be viewed in context, given the injuries and the level of competition faced.
