Iain Henderson Faces Extended Absence After Hip Surgery Ahead of New Season

Ulster Rugby captain Iain Henderson will be sidelined for several months after undergoing hip surgery. The 34-year-old lock, who has earned 86 caps for Ireland, last represented his country in November against New Zealand. Henderson's absence marks a significant blow for Ulster, especially after he missed the latter part of last season due to a suspension. He received a red card during a match against the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship (URC), leading to a three-game ban that included missing the Challenge Cup final against Montpellier in Bilbao. Having made his debut for Ulster in April 2012, Henderson also played his first game for Ireland against South Africa later that year. He has been a prominent figure in rugby, serving as a two-time tourist with the British and Irish Lions, and took over as captain of Ulster following the retirement of Rory Best in 2019. Ulster is set to kick off their URC season at home against Edinburgh on 25 September. However, Henderson is not the only injury concern for head coach Richie Murphy. Other players, including Bryn Ward (shoulder), Juarno Augustus (ankle), and Jude Postlethwaite (knee), have also undergone surgery and are currently in rehabilitation.
