Sam Tierney Commits to Leicester City Amid Rebuilding Phase in Women's Super League
After Leicester City faced relegation from the Women's Super League to WSL 2 in May, the club witnessed a significant player exodus, with fourteen players leaving during the summer transfer window. However, captain Sam Tierney, the longest-serving player at Leicester, provided a much-needed boost by signing a new deal until 2028 in July. The 27-year-old has made 151 appearances for the club and expressed her dedication: "I'm not the type to want to jump ship. Since I've been at Leicester, I've created a genuine connection with the club." Last season proved challenging for Leicester, as they secured only two wins from 22 matches, ending with a troubling -41 goal difference. Concerns arose regarding the team's future, including their ability to continue playing at King Power Stadium and potential budget cuts. Despite the challenges, Tierney remains optimistic about the club's future, stating her desire to foster a new Leicester that can make others "jealous". She emphasized the club's growth since her arrival in 2020, recalling their humble beginnings training in local parks. Tierney, who has experienced seven managerial changes, aims for Leicester to achieve sustainability in the WSL rather than continue as a yo-yo club.
