Can Ireland Finally Claim Their First Win in Women's T20 World Cup History?

Ireland is gearing up for their fifth T20 World Cup, aiming to break a dismal streak of 17 consecutive losses across four previous tournaments. Despite their efforts in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2023, the team has yet to secure a victory, finishing bottom of their group each time. After missing out on the 2024 tournament due to a failure to qualify, Ireland is back in 2026, looking to change their fortunes in England. They open their campaign against Scotland at Old Trafford on Saturday at 10:30 BST, with hopes of finally registering a win. Captain Gaby Lewis, returning from a quad injury, expressed the weight of the winless record hanging over the team. "We've yet to have a win in a World Cup and that is a big thing that is hanging over us," she stated in an interview with BBC Sport NI. Lewis highlighted the significance of achieving at least one victory to avoid future qualification challenges. The matchup against Scotland carries additional weight, as they were the team that denied Ireland a spot in the previous tournament with a surprising victory two years ago. "There was major heartbreak in the Ireland camp after that sore defeat," Lewis recalled. Currently, Ireland is riding a wave of confidence following a successful Tri-Nations series in Clontarf, where they triumphed over both Pakistan and the West Indies. Ranked ninth in the world, Ireland faces a challenging Group B, which includes England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. The top two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals. Lewis emphasized the importance of a strong start against Scotland, noting the existing rivalry and their recent defeat in Nepal. She acknowledged the added challenge of Scotland's new addition, Kirsty Gordon, a former England spinner. "If we get the win, then you never know against England," she concluded.
