Birmingham City Aims to Shock in WSL After Four-Year Absence
Birmingham City returns to the Women’s Super League after winning promotion as WSL2 champions, finishing first last season. The club, a founding member of the league since 2011, aims to establish itself back in the top flight following a four-year absence. The team, predicted to finish 12th by Guardian writers, has made significant changes during the summer transfer window. Key players such as forwards Lily Crosthwaite and Wilma Leidhammar, along with defender Neve Herron, are expected to continue their development at 23 years old. Additionally, the club has bolstered its squad with experienced players like goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley and centre-back Millie Turner. Despite winning the most games in WSL2, inconsistency plagued their performance last season, with six losses. Their first two fixtures this season are challenging, facing Manchester City and Chelsea, which will test their resolve early on. Off the pitch, Birmingham’s women’s team was sold to Shelby Companies Limited, a part of Knighthead Capital Management, with new ambitious ownership aiming to restore the club's competitive edge in the league. The team trains at the renovated Knighthead Performance Centre, enhancing their facilities. Manager Amy Merricks, appointed in April 2024, brings a wealth of experience, having previously coached in the England youth setup and at various clubs. The recruitment of players like Marie Levasseur and Lisa Naalsund adds international pedigree, especially with Naalsund’s FA Cup-winning experience. A standout young talent, Chancelle Effa Effa, joins from Le Havre and is expected to make a significant impact after excelling in youth competitions. As Chelsea Cornet stated, “We know it’s going to be a massive challenge... I’m sure we’re going to be just fine.” Birmingham plays home games at St Andrew’s, where they recorded a club attendance record of 8,749 last season.
